When using our online frame builder you will need to provide us with the height and width [in centimetres] of the work you are planning to frame. To measure accurately, please flatten out the item and record the height and width from edge to edge. Our frame builder works to the nearest millimeter [mm] so you can be really exact in your inputs.

For example, if you have a poster measuring 43.2cm [height] x 29.7cm [width] you should add this exactly as-is, don’t round it up or down.

Frame overlap

Your item will be overlapped by the frame or mat border by 6mm. This means that 6mm of each edge of your item will be hidden under the frame, or if you have chosen to have a mat border, it will be hidden under the mat border.

Frame only

Your item will be slightly overlapped by what we call the ‘frame rabbet’.  The overlap is 6mm, which can be seen in the example below. Please note that the overlap will also apply to the top and bottom edges of your item.

Picture Frame Overlap

Frame with mat border

The below example is a frame with an off-white mat border.  The overlap is 6mm for the border, which can be seen in the example below. Please note that the overlap will also apply to the top and bottom edges of your item.

Matboard Overlap in Picture Framing

If you have an item with a thick border that you wish to have hidden behind the mat border, you can consider to only measure the size of the item you want to show + around 6mm on each side [inc. top & bottom] to account for what will be overlapped by the frame or mat border. If you are at all unsure of this – please feel free to get in touch.

If you are wondering whether to include a mat border, please view the following video for more details:

Large frames or custom requirements
